Slavery, local control and how Douglas County got its name
I somehow found myself scrolling through Wikipedia today, reading about how South Dakota’s counties got their names.
Says here Douglas County was named for Stephen A. Douglas, a senator from Illinois who advocated for popular sovereignty to end the slavery debate. The idea was that each state should decide whether slavery is legal or not.
Man, South Dakotans are really into local control.
