Guess the median enrollment for a S.D. school district
South Dakota has 151 public school districts now that Viborg and Hurley have consolidated.
With 126,759 students last fall, that’s an average of 839 students per district. But the median is much smaller, at 321 (Bridgewater-Emery, coincidentally another recent consolidation).
As I mentioned Monday, 300 students (or 600 or 900, and so on) makes for a financially efficient school district because elementary school teachers generally have full classrooms. Many fall short of that ideal.
