Meierkort says USD’s Tampa recruits ‘not all bad kids’

When I asked Ed Meierkort about his Florida recruiting ties, he amusingly cautioned me against doing the “redneck newspaper” thing and blaming USD’s troubles on the city of Tampa.

“It’s not all bad kids from Tampa,” he said.

He said his first Florida recruit* was Wayne Curry, a defensive lineman who graduated from Chamberlain High School in Tampa. He’s an actor now.

While Curry was at Vermillion, three more kids from Chamberlain High committed to the Coyotes. Two of them, Rico Valdez and Chris Frierson, now are under federal indictment for a conspiracy to steal $1.1 million from the IRS.

Prosecutors say a total of nine people, including five former USD student athletes and one current football player, were involved and that Valdez was the ringleader.

* I think I heard this correctly, but maybe he said Curry was his first Chamberlain HS recruit.
